Democratic Rep. David Scott of Georgia Has Died at 80

The lawmaker was seeking a 13th term in his district.

U.S. Rep. David Scott, the Georgia Democrat who made history as the first Black chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, died on Wednesday at 80.

Scott had represented Georgia’s 13th District for more than two decades and was still seeking a 13th term in Congress when he died, with his latest House vote coming just a day earlier.

“To the public, he was a devoted leader who spent more than 50 years serving his community, the state of Georgia, and the American people,” said his office in an official statement. “Beyond his public services, he was a devoted father, grandfather, husband, and friend. He will be remembered not only for his leadership but for his kindness, compassion, and enduring impact on those around him.”

The congressman’s death closes a long chapter in Georgia politics and leaves another opening in a closely divided House. Scott built his career on agriculture, food aid, and consumer protection, and colleagues described him as a dedicated advocate for the district he represented. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries praised Scott’s service.

"David Scott was a trailblazer who served the district that he represented admirably, rose up from humble beginnings to become the first African American ever to chair the House Ag Committee," Jeffries said to reporters. "He cared about the people that he represented. He was fiercely committed to getting things done for the people of the great state of Georgia, and he'll be deeply missed."

At age 29, Scott was among the youngest members elected to the state legislature. He first entered Congress in 2002 after serving in Georgia state politics, and his tenure made him one of the chamber’s most recognizable Black lawmakers.

In recent years, he had faced questions about his health, but he continued to forge ahead with his reelection bid.

His death adds to a run of recent congressional losses that have forced special elections and shifted the balance of power in the House. Scott is the fifth member of the 119th Congress to die in office, CBS reports.

“His legacy is one of service, perseverance and deep commitment to this state,” said Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens in a statement. He also described him as a “tireless advocate” for his constituents.
