Police Arrest Man Accused of Punching Rep. Maxwell Frost at Sundance

Frost says a man threatened to “deport” him before swinging at his face at a private event in Park City.

Representative Maxwell Alejandro Frost (D-FL) says he was punched in the face at a Sundance Film Festival party in what he describes as a racist, politically charged attack, and Utah police have arrested a suspect.

Born in Orlando, the 29-year-old Afro-Latino Democrat said he was attending a private event in Park City when a man allegedly confronted him before throwing a punch.

“I was assaulted by a man at Sundance Festival,” he wrote on X. He then shared that the man made deportation threats “before he punched me in the face. He was heard screaming racist remarks as he drunkenly ran off. The individual was arrested.”

Soon after, police identified the suspect as 28-year-old Christian Young, who they say crashed the private party at the High West Saloon, a popular spot for Sundance events.

Authorities say Young had been denied entry, then unlawfully got into the event and assaulted Frost and a woman attending the party. No further details have been released about the other attack. During the tense attack between the suspect and Frost, which happened in the men’s restroom, the suspect also shouted that he was proud he was to be “white,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Young was detained by security at the event, then arrested and booked into the Summit County Jail on charges including aggravated burglary and simple assault. Frost said he is physically okay and thanked venue security and Park City police for swiftly stepping in.

“I am horrified by the attack on Congressman Maxwell Frost. Grateful that he is okay, but appalled that this terrifying assault took place. The perpetrator must be aggressively prosecuted. Hate and political violence has no place in our country, and the entire House Democratic Caucus family stands with Maxwell,” said Representative Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) in a post on X.

Festival organizers also condemned the assault. “We strongly condemn last night’s assault and abhor any form of violence, harassment, and hate speech. While the incident occurred at a non-Festival-affiliated event, such behavior is intolerable and against our values of upholding a welcoming and inspiring environment for all our attendees,” said the statement.

Frost’s assault comes on the heels of rising xenophobia and growing racist sentiment around the country.
