Zoe Saldana's Nina Simone Biopic Now Scheduled to Be Released Later This Year

The controversial project has been on the shelf since 2012.

For better or for worse, we may actually see Zoe Saldana as Nina Simone this year. The long-maligned biopic of the jazz icon, called Nina, is slated for release towards the end of 2015, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The information was slipped into an article about Ben Latham-Jones, who is the new owner of Ealing Studios, the British company that owns the rights to Nina. According to the profile, eOne and Universal plan to release the biopic, which also stars David Oyelowo, worldwide later this year.

Nina has been on the shelf since it wrapped production in 2012. The director, Cynthia Mort, has effectively been ousted from the project, and Saldana would probably prefer it stays among the cobwebs for all the backlash she's faced over portraying Simone.
No further details are available about when the film will come out, but until we know more, you can tide yourself over with a look at our interview with Saldana in which she shares her controversial views about playing the beloved singer: is your #1 source for Black celebrity newsphotos, exclusive videos and all the latest in the world of hip hop and R&B music.
