Former Juror Says Most Of His Peers Wanted To Deliver Guilty Verdict In YNW Melly Trial

A mistrial was declared last month in the Florida rapper’s double murder case.

A former juror in YNW Melly’s double murder case declared a mistrial last month says most of his fellow jury members wanted to deliver a guilty verdict.

According to WPLG, who spoke with the juror, a majority of the members of the 12-person jury believed the Florida rapper was guilty of killing his friends Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams on October 26, 2018. The anonymous juror claims one woman, in particular, was responsible for the case sending in a mistrial.

"From day one, she had issues with the foreperson selected, at one point crossing her arms and saying she was 'Done!'" the juror said to the news station. "When another juror asked to not shut down and set her feelings aside, she exploded ... She was explosive, manipulative, she was rude, she yelled insults at anyone who had a different opinion. She was there to cause chaos.”

Additionally, the juror claimed that it was an 11-1 count to convict Melly of manslaughter following deliberations, however, the woman was able to sway two other jurors’ opinions about the rapper’s guilt.

"Then, she came over and announced to the group that they had changed their minds, but when another juror asked why she was speaking for them, she exploded," the former juror said. "It’s something we’re never going to forget. We were shaking at the end."

YNW Melly’s double murder case is now heading for a retrial.

According to WTVJ, the Broward County State Attorney’s office confirmed they will retry the case a second time and that both sides could refine their strategies.

The double murder trial of Melly, born Jamell Demons, ended on July 22 in a deadlocked jury. A unanimous verdict is required to convict or acquit a defendant charged with murder.

Judge John Murphy had twice asked the jurors to keep deliberating after they said they were deadlocked. But the jury came back a third time without a different result.

In July 2022, a Florida judge removed the death penalty as a possible sentence option for Melly. The rapper remains behind bars on double homicide charges.

Melly and a second man, YNW Bortlen (born Courtland Henry), are accused of killing the victims and then attempting to stage the crime scene to resemble a drive-by shooting. Melly pled not guilty to the first-degree murder charges in March 2019. He would then address his arrest in a since-deleted Instagram post that same year.

According to prosecutors, Ballistics tests show the victims were shot from inside the Jeep. But defense lawyers point to the fact that a gun was never recovered and assert Melly had no apparent motive for the crime.
