Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley Joins Girl Scouts for a Day of Civic Engagement

At Boston’s Edward M. Kennedy Institute, dozens of girls stepped into mock Senate roles.

Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley spent the weekend inspiring future leaders during a special program at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute in Boston. The event, “Girls Leading Government,” brought together 40 Girl Scouts for an introduction to policymaking and civic leadership.

According to a press release, the program transformed its full-scale replica of the U.S. Senate Floor into an interactive classroom. The Girl Scouts were sworn in as “Senators for a Day,” formed committees, collaborated on legislation, and delivered speeches.

“Our girls are limitless,” Pressley said following the event. “It was an amazing, fulfilling day. I’m inspired and encouraged by our Girl Scouts and their leadership.” She also praised the Kennedy Institute for its commitment to civic education, calling its programming “a powerful sightline into a day in Congress” that encourages young people “to step into their power.”

Throughout the day, Pressley spoke with participants about her own path to elected office and her work representing Massachusetts’ 7th Congressional District. The event was designed to merge hands-on learning with mentorship, helping girls envision themselves as future changemakers.

Pressley’s record on youth empowerment is longstanding. Before serving in Congress, she mentored through Big Sister Boston and launched Ayanna’s BIG Challenge to recruit mentors for girls in neighborhoods with the longest waiting lists. In Washington, she has advanced policies promoting equity and education, including the STRONG Support for Children Act and the Ending PUSHOUT Act, which targets the over-disciplining of girls of color in schools.

In 2023, Pressley secured $250,000 in community project funding for the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston to strengthen one-on-one mentorship programs. Her legislative and community work both reflect a consistent mission: to ensure every young person has the tools to thrive.

The Girl Scouts, founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low, have long shared that vision. From civic engagement and environmental stewardship to STEM education and advocacy, the organization continues to cultivate leadership, confidence, and compassion in girls nationwide.

With “Girls Leading Government,” Pressley and the Girl Scouts reaffirmed a powerful message: leadership isn’t reserved for adulthood, it begins the moment a girl believes her voice matters.
