Da Brat Ordered to Pay $6.4 Million to Assault Victim

Judge awards former NFL cheerleader damages after rapper hit her with a liquor bottle.

Serving time in prison for assaulting a former NFL cheerleader and hostess at an Atlanta nightclub is not punishment enough, said a Cobb County judge to Da Brat, who now has to ante up $6.4 million for the pain and suffering she caused.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the civil trial for the 2007 incident wrapped up Thursday (Feb. 27), after a delay caused by one of the jurors. The judge ruled that Brat (born Shawntae Harris) pay $3.7 million in compensatory damages and $2.7 million in punitive damages to the victim, Shayla Stevens.

Mark Link, an attorney for Stevens, said that the assault was life changing for his client. "She has a brain injury and is a brain injury survivor," he told the AJC. "It's not something that will ever go away. She has a scar on her face. She had so much going for her and it came to an abrupt stop because of this attack."

The So So Def rapper hit Stevens with a rum bottle during an argument at a Halloween party at a club owned by Jermaine Dupri at the time. Brat pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and was sentenced to three years, a fine, and community service hours. She was released in 2011 and is still on probation for the incident.

Brat's attorney, B.J. Bernstein said having to pay millions is too much.

"I'm baffled," Bernstein said. "She owned up to what happened when it happened and was punished."

Bernstein has yet to decide if an appeal will be made.
