This Week in Good Black News: History-Making Firsts, Well-Deserved Flowers, and the Next Wave is Clocked In

From HBCU leadership to BET Awards recognition and an overdue Oscar honor, Black excellence kept finding the spotlight this week.

Some weeks come with heavy headlines, especially these days. This week was no exception; however, for the sake of balance, the week has also brought with it Black excellence with receipts.

Our people showed up in places that matter: in education, in entertainment, in legacy-making recognition, and in the kinds of cultural wins that remind you the story is still being written. It was the kind of week that felt like momentum, and we needed that.

What stands out most is the range. These wins are not just about one stage, one genre, or one institution. They are about leadership, visibility, style, artistry, and the next generation stepping into view with something real to say. And that is exactly the kind of good news worth keeping front and center.

Spelman College named Dr. Ayanna Howard its 12th president, a major move for one of the nation’s most storied HBCUs. Howard, a nationally recognized roboticist and AI expert who currently serves as dean of engineering at Ohio State, will start on August 1 and bring a background in robotics, human-centered design, and technology leadership to the role.

In the land of the 2026 BET Awards, there was room made for something Black culture has always contributed to: fashion and style. BET launched the Fashion Vanguard Awards, arguing that Black style has always been one of the culture’s most powerful languages. It is a welcome nod to the people whose looks shape the moment before the rest of the world catches up. Who will win the gold on June 28?

In film history news, Floyd Norman is finally getting the recognition his career has long earned. The Disney pioneer and first Black animator at the studio will receive an honorary Oscar at the 2026 Governors Awards. Norman’s 65-year career helped shape Disney classics from “Sleeping Beauty” to “The Jungle Book” and beyond, making this a major late-career salute.

Back to the BET Awards conversation…everyone’s favorite multihyphenate is getting her flowers! Teyana Taylor will receive the Icon of the Year Award at the 2026 BET Awards, a well-earned honor as Taylor is the kind of creative force who everyone is watching right now.

And for the future of Black entertainment, BET’s Young Stars category is already buzzing. The 2026 field includes eight young nominees building lanes in TV, music, and digital media, including Daria Johns, “Gracie’s Corner,” Heiress Harris, “Jazzy’s World TV,” Lela Hoffmeister, North West, Thaddeus J. Mixson, and VanVan. The category is one of the clearest snapshots of where Black youth stardom is headed, and it’s an honor to celebrate the next generation in a major way.
