Indiana Woman Released in Active Labor Forced to Give Birth Outside, Is Now Hospitalized With Complications

Mercedes Wells delivered her daughter on the roadside shortly after her discharge and is now undergoing treatment for health concerns linked to the traumatic birth.

The woman in Indiana who delivered her baby on the side of the road, after being sent home from the hospital, is now dealing with serious health complications following the birth.

Mercedes Wells delivered her daughter, Alena Ariel, on the side of the road on Nov. 16, just eight minutes after leaving Franciscan Health Crown Point, according to a report from ABC 7 Chicago. =

Her family says she should have never been discharged in the first place.

Her sister-in-law, Cherise Thompson, detailed what happened in a Facebook post that quickly gained traction.

In the days since the roadside delivery, Wells’ condition has taken another turn.

Her brother-in-law, Lance Thompson Jr., shared that she’s now back in the hospital dealing with complications linked to the traumatic way she gave birth, according to a report from The Chicago Tribune

She’s currently receiving care at Community Hospital in Munster, Ind. as her family says she’s battling post-birth health issues tied directly to the ordeal she endured.

Her husband, Leon Wells, told reporters that things took a frightening turn on Sunday (Nov. 23), when she suddenly began experiencing severe pain and heavy bleeding.

She was rushed to the University of Chicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, Ill., where doctors realized how serious her condition was.

Lance shares that the staff at that hospital recognized Mercedes from the viral story and quickly arranged for her to be transferred to Community Hospital for more specialized care.

He said the family was told she’ll likely need to remain hospitalized for several days as she recovers from the trauma of the delivery.

Leon shared that doctors are treating the complications but have to be careful with the medication because Mercedes is breastfeeding.

She’s being given smaller doses so she can continue to nurse baby Alena while still managing the pain.

Meanwhile regarding the roadside incident, Thompson said the family is refusing to stay quiet, noting that they want accountability because “no woman should ever be treated like this.”

She wrote that the goal was to make sure the public understands how Mercedes was “dismissed, ignored, and endangered,” and she urged anyone in the medical, legal, or media fields to help them “fight this injustice.”

In her own words, Mercedes described a night that went from painful to terrifying.

She said she was never advised to seek care at another hospital.

Instead, she was told to go home by the nurse on duty, who allegedly insisted she wasn’t in active labor.

Mercedes explained that she was checked shortly after midnight and told she was only three centimeters dilated and that a nurse, not a doctor, delivered that assessment.

She said she never saw a doctor at any point during her stay, despite being hooked up to monitors for more than five hours while experiencing steady contractions.

Mercedes walked the unit repeatedly as her contractions intensified, going from five minutes apart to four, then down to one minute apart.

During what she described as her final cervical check early Sunday morning, Mercedes said the nurse admitted she could feel the baby’s head but still insisted there was “no change” and that Mercedes remained at three centimeters.

The nurse allegedly told her she was being discharged and could “come back” if her labor continued.

Mercedes says she begged to stay.

She recalled crying out at the nurses’ station and receiving “not one ounce of empathy,” only “blank stares and cold words” as they prepared her discharge.

She also shared that the nurse who wheeled her downstairs touched her stomach and told her family, “See, her uterus is still soft.”

Mercedes described the treatment as “inhumane,” adding, “I still can’t believe it.”

Minutes later, she gave birth on the side of the road.

Meanwhile, Franciscan Health Crown Point, the hospital that discharged her before she gave birth on the roadside, issued a response.

As BET reported,  President and CEO Raymond Grady confirmed that, after reviewing the incident, the doctor and nurse involved in Mercedes’ care “are no longer employed by Franciscan” as of Friday (Nov. 21).

Grady acknowledged that the situation was “difficult to watch” and said the video circulating online does not reflect the hospital’s principles.

He noted that their values include protecting life and showing compassion, adding that both are compromised when a mother and newborn are sent home too soon or when caregivers fail to take a patient’s pain seriously.
