Michelle Obama Reflects on Why She's Okay Not Having A Son And How Mothers Can Raise Better Men

During her podcast, the former First Lady shares why she’s grateful she didn’t have a boy and what she hopes parents will teach their sons.

Michelle Obama has already proven she’s a loving wife, a boss entrepreneur, and a proud mom. But if you’ve ever wondered whether she ever wanted a son, she confirms she’s good.

During an episode of her podcast “IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson,” the former first lady opened up about the difficulties of raising boys after her guest, Angie Martinez, jokingly suggested she and Barack should’ve added a boy to their tribe.

“I’m so glad I didn’t have a boy,” the 61-year-old revealed.

“He would’ve been Barack Obama,” she says jokingly before expressing her understanding that he would have big shoes to fill after his father.

“I would have felt for him.”

Michelle also shared her views on mothers and how they tend to love their sons, but not raise them.

“People say mothers raise their daughters and love their sons, but I’d say love your son but raise him too,” she expressed.

“Raise him to be as strong as you know he has to be. Teach him to deal with the traffic stop, but also how to communicate in a marriage and be a listening father. To be a compassionate neighbor and a voting citizen. Someone who will pay attention and care about something outside of himself. If you’re thinking about that human, then all these choices become a bit more clear.”
