Mariah Carey Reveals Details On Her Long-Lost ’90s Grunge Album

The superstar soprano opened up on ‘The Tonight Show’ about the unreleased project ‘Someone’s Ugly Daughter’ and why it never saw the light of day.

Who is Chick? It’s a grunge band from the 1990s featuring the world’s favorite soprano, Mariah Carey and her friend Clarissa Dane. Carey has pulled back the curtain on a musical chapter that most fans have never seen—an unreleased album called “Somebody’s Ugly Daughter.”

During Carey’s appearance on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon to promote her latest album, “Here For It All,” the host mentioned that their house band drummer, Questlove introduced him to Mariah’s grunge album and Fallon became obsessed. So of course when Carey graced the show with her presence, he just had to ask! Fallon pulled out “Someone’s Ugly Daughter” by Chick and the album cover featured lipstick, a kiss, and a roach. “I drew this cover. I didn’t draw the roach. The roach is real,” Carey joked.

Fallon then played a snippet of the song “Prom Queen,” featuring Carey’s stellar vocals in a punk rock realm.

“It’s her best record,” Questlove chimed in.

Chick was a result of the songstress having fun in the studio while she was working on her award-winning album “Daydream.” She told Fallon, "I was just rebelling because I was working on ‘Daydream,’ and I was doing, like, ‘Always Be My Baby’ and ‘Fantasy,’ and those kind of songs, and I loved doing that," she said. "But at the end of the night, when the band was still there, I’d say, ‘Can you play, like, [vocalizes]?’ You know, just play this so that I can get out of my head."

In an interview with People last year, Carey opened up about her rebellious “secret” album, "People have been asking me about it, and it's something that I love so much," she said. "And we might see it in 2025, probably a little bit later than that." And here it is!

Carey regrets not putting the album out when she made it in the ‘90s. If she had it her way, it would be a readily available part of her vast offerings. She told Fallon, "I always regretted not putting it out, but they kind of stopped me at that point. You know, it was Sony at the time. We love Sony now, but back then… a little controlling." She then joked that they can now put the album out through Jimmy Fallon Records.
