Kyrie Irving Questions Stephen A. Smith's $100M Contract

Irving had doubts about whether the ESPN pundit is worth his recent multi-million dollar deal.

Kyrie Irving recently gave his opinion on Steph A. Smith’s lucrative contract.

During a livestream from Kyrie Irving’s Twitch account on Friday night (July 11), Irving shared his thoughts on whether Smith was worth the five-year $100 million deal he signed at ESPN.

"I'm going to discuss his contract. I'm going to discuss Stephen A.'s contract," the Mavs guard said on a livestream. "I'm gonna say, 'I don't think you're worth it.”

“Does Smith deserve to earn more than Wemby?” questioned Irving later on in the live stream.

Seeking to give clarity to his statement, Irving claimed that he used Smith as an example to make a larger point about how NBA analysts should be held accountable.

Stephen A. Smith Lands New Deal With SiriusXM

Now that may be controversial," Irving continued. "Obviously, this is just for… someone might try and clip it up. Watch the whole clip. But if I were the one to say that 'Yo, you don't deserve your contract. You didn't show up to work.' Does Stephen A. deserve a max deal?"

Recently, Smith talked about Irving's recent contract extension with the Mavericks, arguing that he deserved more than the three-year $119 million deal he signed. He also added that he believed Irving would have received a max contract if Mark Cuban hadn’t sold a majority stake in the Mavericks to the Adelson family in 2023.

"In today's economy, where you got cats getting paid $55, $60 million plus, you couldn't give this guy at least $43 to $45 million a year? Remember, he was supposed to be getting a player option that would have given him $43 million,” Smith said at the time. “So, to me, at $119 million, that is a fraction less than $40 million per. Kyrie Irving deserves more than that.”
