The 14-Team Journey: Black QB is the NFL's Most-Traveled Player Ever

Marshawn Lynch's cousin has secured his place in NFL record books, signing to play for a franchise he last suited up for in 2018.

Josh Johnson, the ultimate NFL journeyman, has added another chapter to his remarkable career by signing with the Washington Commanders, marking his return to a franchise he previously played for in 2018. This latest move cements Johnson's place in NFL history as the player who has been a member of more teams than anyone else in league history, with 14 different franchises to his name.

The Oakland, California native's extraordinary journey not only includes 14 NFL teams but also four different professional leagues, showcasing his resilience and longevity in a sport where careers are notoriously short. The record-holding journey across the league even landed him a commercial earlier this year.

Johnson's NFL odyssey began when he was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. His career path then took him to the San Francisco 49ers for multiple stints throughout his career, including 2012, 2014, 2020, and 2022.

The quarterback's travels continued with stops at the Cleveland Browns in 2012 before joining the Cincinnati Bengals in 2013 and returning in 2015. That same year, Johnson suited up for three different teams: the New York Jets, the Indianapolis Colts, and the Buffalo Bills.

His journey continued with stints at the Baltimore Ravens across multiple seasons (2016, 2021, 2023-2024), the New York Giants from 2016-2017, and the Houston Texans in 2017. Johnson also spent time with the Oakland Raiders in 2018, the Detroit Lions in 2019, and the Denver Broncos in 2022.

Beyond the NFL, Johnson has also showcased his talents in the United Football League with the Sacramento Mountain Lions, the Alliance of American Football (though he never played a game), and the XFL with the Los Angeles Wildcats.

While primarily serving as a backup throughout his career, Johnson has started games for the Buccaneers, Ravens, and Washington. One of his career highlights came in 2018 when Washington signed him after not having played a down of football for five years. Johnson famously admitted to playing Madden NFL to learn his new teammates' names.

"It went from nobody cares to 'why they signing him? We could've signed anybody' to 'oh this guy can actually play' because I won a game," Johnson said of that experience. The closest competitors to Johnson's record are Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh McCown, who each played for 9 different teams during their careers.

Off the field, Johnson is part of the Fam 1st Foundation with his cousins Marshawn Lynch and Marcus Peters, working to empower underserved youth with a focus on financial literacy.
