Kamala Harris Is Weighing 2026 Gubernatorial Run
In her first major public appearance since her 2024 presidential defeat, former Vice President Kamala Harris returned to the spotlight with a forceful critique of current government policies and a measured nod to her political ambitions.
Speaking before a receptive Democratic crowd in San Francisco on Wednesday, Harris denounced recent economic policies, particularly his sweeping tariff plan, as a direct threat to working Americans.
“As I predicted, these tariffs are clearly inviting a recession,” Harris said, offering what many interpreted as a subtle “I told you so.”
Though she stopped short of announcing any formal plans, Harris acknowledged that conversations about her future are already underway.
“Everybody is asking me, ‘Well, what’ve you been thinking about these days?’” she said with a smile, as the crowd responded with cheers.
According to sources close to the former vice president, Harris is considering three options: running for California governor in 2026, making another presidential bid in 2028, or stepping away from electoral politics altogether.
“I don’t think she will make a wrong decision,” a former senior Harris campaign official told CBS News. “Seventy-five million Americans voted for her. She is well-positioned.”
In recent weeks, Harris has reportedly been holding private meetings and calls with Democratic officials, party strategists, and longtime allies. Insiders say those conversations are less about her next campaign and more focused on helping shape the party’s direction in the post-Biden era.
“She has been speaking to a lot of voices,” the former campaign official added.
While no decision is expected imminently, sources say Harris aims to announce her plans by the end of the summer. In the meantime, she’s slated to headline a high-profile Democratic National Committee fundraiser in New York this May—a move that many see as a signal she’s far from finished with politics.
