BET Talks: Rain and Richard Pryor Jr. Reflect on Legacy, Mental Health, and Holiday Giving
Rain Pryor and Richard Pryor Jr., children of the legendary comedian Richard Pryor, joined host Miabelle on BET Talks for an emotional and inspiring discussion. The siblings shared their experiences growing up in the shadow of their famous father, their own creative paths, and their roles in the upcoming movie Brewster's Millions Christmas. They also opened up about mental health, the importance of giving, and the enduring legacy of their father.
Honoring a Family Legacy
Rain and Richard Jr. spoke about their deep connection to their father’s legacy and how it continues to influence their lives. They emphasized the importance of family and maintaining the values Richard Pryor instilled in them. Rain shared how her father’s spiritual presence felt especially strong during the filming of Brewster's Millions Christmas.
“I miss my dad being here in the physical presence, but I felt him in the spiritual presence,” she said. Richard Jr. echoed this sentiment, noting the responsibility they feel to uphold their father’s name. “We know the legacy in which we come from. And so we just have to continue to show up in our lives and manifest.”
Advocating for Mental Health
The siblings were candid about their own journeys with therapy and mental health, stressing its importance within the African-American community. Rain discussed the stigma surrounding mental health issues, particularly for men of color, and the need for open conversations.
“It’s important to be able to talk about some issues that we can’t always talk about with everybody,” Rain shared. Richard Jr. added, “Mental health is such a taboo in our community, especially for African-American men. So you got to be able to stand up and be strong and speak your truth, because it’s going to help somebody else.”
