Texas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett Weighs U.S. Senate Bid

The Dallas lawmaker says new district boundaries could reshape Texas politics.

Representative Jasmine Crockett, one of the most outspoken and popular members of Congress, says she is considering a run for the U.S. Senate. Speaking on “The Lurie Daniel Favors Show” on SiriusXM Urban View (channel 126), the Dallas Democrat said she is “seriously examining” whether to enter the race.

“Every other day, there’s a poll that comes out that makes it clear that I can win the primary for the U.S. Senate race in Texas,” Crockett said on an October 21 episode. “And I am looking. Because if you want to take my seat of 766,000 away, I feel like there has to be some karma in that — to where I take your seat that is for 30 million away.”

Crockett’s remarks came amid a major political shake-up in Texas. The state legislature’s mid-decade redistricting plan redrew the lines for several congressional seats and, according to Reuters, triggered lawsuits claiming that the new maps dilute the power of Black voters. The unusual move, coming just four years after the last round of redistricting, has added confusion for local officials and anxiety among Democrats whose seats were reshaped to favor Republican challengers.

For Crockett, who has represented Texas’s 30th District since 2023, the political reality is personal. “We are doing some testing here shortly to see if I can expand the electorate,” she told Favors. “The key to winning Texas isn’t about looking at the current electorate — it’s about expanding the electorate.”

Before winning her congressional seat, Crockett built a reputation as a fierce civil rights attorney and public defender in Dallas County. She took on police misconduct cases, defended protestors, and frequently used her legal background to spotlight inequities in the justice system. Her rise from courtroom advocate to state legislator and then to Congress reflected her ability to connect progressive policy with the practical concerns of working-class Texans.

In Washington, Crockett quickly became one of the Democratic Party’s most recognizable new voices. She served as a national co-chair for then-Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign and gained national attention for her sharp questioning during congressional hearings.

Crockett said her next step is to review polling and fundraising data before making a final decision about entering the Senate race. “The question will be whether we’ve got enough juice to expand the electorate,” she said. “If we can, then I will strongly be considering hopping in.”

Rep. Crockett could be a formidable contender. As the Houston Chronicle reported in July, Crockett has raised more money than any other member of the U.S. House from Texas.
