A woman who crashed her car into a Memphis house has been charged with vehicular homicide in the death of Galen Young a former college and NBA player who was found dead in the home.
According to the Associated Press, 19-year-old Miracle Renee Rutherford was indicted in the death of the 45-year-old, who was inside the house when the June 5, 2021 crash occurred. The Shelby County district attorney’s office said Rutherford was speeding at around 2:45 a.m. that night when she lost control of her car, went airborne and crashed.
Investigators say a woman in the house told them she lived there with her adult son but he was not home at the time. Hours later, Young’s body was discovered after other family members arrived to help remove items from the crash site.
Young played high school basketball in Memphis and played his college ball at Northwest Mississippi Community College and UNC-Charlotte. He led the latter to two NCAA Tournament appearances and earned All Conference-USA honors.
