2022 NAACP Image Awards: 5 Reasons Why These Movies Were Nominated for ‘Outstanding Animation Motion Picture’
In recent years, representation in animation has seriously amped it up with films like NAACP Image Awards winner Soul and other films such as Moana, which follows a Pacific Island princess. And although there’s still much left to be done, the effort hasn’t gone unnoticed.
This year, the NAACP Image Awards honors outstanding animation and many of the movies nominated made us laugh and cry, but most importantly, it allowed its young viewers to see themselves in the media they digest. Ahead of the ceremony, here’s a look at the movies nominated for “Outstanding Animation Motion Picture.”
Encanto
The Madrigals are a family living in the mountains of beautiful Colombia. However, when their home and the magic that surrounds them are in danger, their only hope now rests upon Mirabel—the only issue is that she doesn’t have a unique gift. Mirabel must find the magic within herself to help save her village in this screenplay by Broadway star Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Luca
Disney’s Luca takes audience members to a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera in the coming-of-age story about a young boy’s unforgettable summer he has, but his secret threatens all: he’s a sea monster from another world.
Raya and the Last Dragon
Disney’s animated movie lone warrior challenged with tracking down the last dragon to help fend off evil monsters determined to destroy their land. The film stood out for its vivid storyline and highlighting the diverse Southeast Asian cultures.

Sing 2
The musical sequel, which features the voices of Bono, Halsey, Tori Kelly, Letitia Wright, and more, follows a band of singing animal friends who are set put on the most significant musical event ever—but not before they can convince the world's most reclusive rock star to join them.
Vivo
Lin-Manuel Miranda is back, this time as a star in the film about a music-loving Kinkajou who set out on the journey of a lifetime to fulfill his destiny and deliver a love song for an old friend.
The cast also features the voices of Zoe Saldana, Juan de Marcos González, Michael Rooker, Brian Tyree Henry, Nicole Byer, Gloria Estefan, and more. The film also marks Sony Pictures Animation's first musical film.
