New York Teen Killed Walking to School, Family Shattered

A boy on his way to school became the latest life stolen by gun violence. Police search for answers.

A 13-year-old, Queens, N.Y., boy has lost his life to gun violence.

According to CBS New York, Sanjay Samuel was heading to school with friends around 8 a.m. on Sept. 22, when he was shot in the head, outside of a Cambria Heights Dunkin’ Donuts.

According to local police, someone approached the teen and his friends on a scooter, got into an argument with the group, then fired a single shot, hitting Samuel before taking off.

First responders rushed Sanjay to Cohen Children’s Medical Center, where he remained on life support for two days. "Sanjay's not doing well. Sanjay's brain dead," Vilene Griffith, Sanjay's mother, told CBS.

"Nothing is going on. He's not breathing on his own. He's not doing nothing."

Sadly, the young teen was pronounced dead, Wednesday, at 12:35 p.m.

Before his death, the family launched a GoFundMe in an effort to share Samuel’s story and to raise funds for mounting medical costs.

“Sanjay’s brothers have become withdrawn, and his sister is struggling to cope with the pain, often crying inconsolably,” wrote Griffith in a statement.

Online, Samuel’s death has sparked broader conversations about gun violence.

On X, New York Mayor Eric Adams expressed his condolences, “Sanjay Samuel had his whole life ahead of him, and now it's been tragically taken away. We must protect our city from gun violence, so we never lose another Sanjay. This is our #1 priority.

Authorities are still investigating, and no arrests have been made as they review local surveillance footage.
