'Maybe He Said It to Frederick Douglass,' GOP Gets Trolled for Tweeting Fake Abraham Lincoln Quote on His Birthday

Looks like the "party of Lincoln" needs a new description.
  • On February 12, the GOP Twitter page tweeted a quote from Abraham Lincoln for his birthday

  • The only problem was that the quote was fake

The site Quote Investigator believed the quote was most likely first spoken by a medical doctor named Edward J. Stieglitz, quoted in the Chicago Tribune in 1947.

  • The tweet has since been deleted, but not without people commenting on the irony of the situation

  • It did not take long for a game to be made out of the embarrassing blunder

  • Fake quotes from Lincoln were posted all over Twitter

  • One person tweeted the ultimate response that combined another mishap from the Trump administration
