5 Women to Watch In R&B

In celebrating Women’s History Month, there are a plethora of Black women who are taking R&B to new heights.

Those who think R&B is dead must not be listening to all the great music being produced today. A plethora of artists are putting their unique imprint on the genre with diverse musical styles and impeccable musicianship, and Black women are taking R&B to new heights.

Following the path blazed by their foremothers, 2024 will be another banner year for Black women in R&B who are unafraid to bare their souls with authenticity and share their stories of healing, passing, love, and sexuality.

In celebrating Women’s History Month and their contributions to music, here are 5 Women to Watch In R&B.

Honey Bxby

Hailing from Asbury, New Jersey, Honey Bxby is an emerging force in the sphere of R&B and her story is one of true perseverance. She began as a cosmetology student until her gift of singing and songwriting opened doors for her industry. Currently, she is signed to Atlantic Records imprint Rebirth/ART@WAR and released her debut EP “3 Words, 8 Letters,” Spanning 10 tracks that include “Trouble,” “Touchin,” and “Get Your Lick Back”, Bxby is set on making her mark in R&B. Bxby has toured with Sexyy Red and performed “Touchin” on the BET Soul Train Awards  Amplified stage for emerging artists.

Bonita Jalane

Brooklyn-born Bonita Jalane’s brand of R&B melds the rawness of New York City with sultry, piercing vocals. Her talent was evident as she was chosen to write and sing hooks for the Dipset crew including Cam’ron and Juelz Santanna. She has also performed with Chris Brown, Monica, and Fantasia. In 2019, she released her debut project, “Introducing: Bonita Jalene,” which showcased her vocal prowess and songwriting. 2024 is shaping up to be her best year, She recently released her latest track “So High” produced by Gregory “Grams” Moore which is the latest track off her forthcoming project.

Judith Hill

Judith Hill is known in the industry for her work behind the scenes. The Los Angeles native and Grammy Award winner has been a background vocalist for Michael Jackson, Josh Groban, and her debut album was produced by Prince. The singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist released her But now she is moving from the background to center stage, where she’s always belonged. After releasing her debut, “Back in Time,” and several other projects, Hill is back on the scene with her newest body of work. “On her latest song, “Dame de la Lumière”, Hill honors the legacy of the powerful woman who has influenced her life. The single is from her forthcoming album “Letters From A Black Widow,” which is set to be released on April 26.

Brandy Haze

Brandy Haze brings influences of trap, house, pop, and electronic dance to her brand of contemporary R&B. A native of Chino Hills, California, Haze has carved out a space in the game that is uniquely her own. A prolific artist, Haze has curated an impressive discography where her sultry vocals and pen game are on full display. In 2019, she released her debut project, “Roses,” which was produced by Ian Thomas. She went on to release numerous projects, including  “Silhouette,” “That's Unfortunate,”” Silhouette, Vol. 2,” and “Where We Left Off,” which was released in 2022. Her latest offerings, “Say Something” and “Circles,” have garnered rave reviews. With the recent release of her latest project "SAD GRL SZN," she will continue to grow her audience with her magnetic artistry.

Tanerélle

Atlanta's own Tanerélle is a fiercely independent artist who refuses to allow her music to be defined by labels. Also known as “Mama Saturn” she blends R&B,  Dance/Electronica, Rock/Alternative to curate her Afro-futuristic sound. After relocating to Los Angeles to pursue her music dream, she released an EP titled “11:11” in 2017. In 2020, she opened on tour for Ari Lennox in Australia and New Zealand. The same year, her single “Nothing Without You” became the season 3 soundtrack of HBO’s “Insecure.” Tanerélle followed up her debut in 2022 with the release of “82 Moons,” which kept her momentum as a one-of-a-kind artist. So far, her music has garnered more than 3 million listens on Spotify
