Da Brat and Wife Judy Said They Received Death Threats After Using White Sperm Donor
Da Brat and Jessica “Judy” Dupart recently revealed that they chose a white sperm donor to conceive their son, True Legend, through IVF, and that decision has prompted death threats.
The couple discussed the harassment in their new book, “The Way Love Goes,” and spoke with People about the backlash, describing violent messages that told them they “should miscarry.” The threat was intensely hurtful considering Brat miscarried before getting pregnant with True.
"It broke my heart," Brat said of the loss. "But I wanted to try again. Thank God I didn't quit or give up." She says that pregnancy was bumpy at times — "All those IVF hormones!" — but once he arrived, she learned she was born to be a mother.
Dupart told People the decision to use a white donor was not about preference, but practicality and health. There was a limited supply of donor sperm that matched after standard genetic screening. “Only about 3% of donor sperm is from Black men,” she explained, adding that the couple’s priority was a healthy pregnancy.
Da Brat — who was 49 when the couple welcomed True — and Dupart said the harassment included direct threats aimed at relatives, prompting concern for safety and privacy as they navigated new parenthood under intense online scrutiny.
The couple was still able to experience joy in parenthood, despite the difficult road they traveled to get there. They also shared how precious their child is to them. "[It] feels like a dream. He's perfect in every way.” Dupart said. "[We’re] very appreciative for such a blessing of our bundle of joy. This journey has been more amazing than we could've ever imagined."
The couple’s experience also raises questions about access to donor resources: low availability of Black-donor sperm is a known issue in fertility circles, making matches harder to find for some Black intended parents.’
