Heartbreak Nearly Led Regina Hall to Nun Life

The actress said a breakup sent her into a spiritual deep dive that briefly had her considering convent life before realizing she was ‘too seasoned.’

Regina Hall almost became a nun?!

The “One Battle After Another” star opened up about a surprising chapter in her life that almost took her far away from Hollywood. In an interview with host Craig Melvin’s “Glass Half Full” podcast, the actress said a breakup a few years ago pushed her into a deep spiritual period and made her seriously consider becoming a nun.

Hall said the experience of that bad breakup helped her see “all the beauty in the divine orchestration of things,” which made the breakup “worth it.” She said the journey was not impulsive or casual. She explained that she took the initial steps toward that life and compared the process to “going ring shopping,” adding that the time leading up to it included meditation, prayer, and quiet.

According to Hall, what stood out most was the closeness she felt with God during that season, and that spiritual connection helped her make sense of what she had gone through. “I think it was significant, but what was more significant is the time that led up to me to do it… The incredible romance I was having with God. It was incredible. It was an incredible time of meditation, of like prayer and quiet. It was just an incredible, peaceful time,” Hall said.

But even as Hall explored the possibility, the move never fully happened. She later said she was turned away because of her age, joking that she was “too seasoned” for the order she was considering. Hall said the age limit was around 39, and she was already older than that. She also noted that different religious orders have different requirements, which can include age, past relationships, or family connections.

For Hall, the revelation adds another layer to the public image she has built over the years: funny, open, and willing to go there when talking about pain, faith, and growth. The “Scary Movie” star’s reflection shows that even the most unexpected detours can become part of a bigger story, especially when heartbreak leads to a deeper look at one’s life and purpose.
