This Black Actress Just Put The #TimesUp Movement On Blast For Shutting Her Out

She wonders if she wasn’t “hot enough” to join.

The #TimesUp movement has done a lot of good in bringing awareness to sexual harassment in Hollywood, but not everyone believes it’s working for them.

  • That’s what actress Thandie Newton says she believes. During an interview with News Corp (according to Vulture) the Westworld star explained how she was shut out from the movement, describing it as “very painful.”

“I wasn’t hot enough,” she said. “I wasn’t mainstream enough and I wasn’t going to be at the Oscars this year, even though I am having a renaissance in my career.”

Social media reacted heavily to this statement.

  • Fortunately, for Newton, her speaking out has actually helped increase her acting pay. It was recently announced that the actresses on Westworld have been promised a wage increase for the show’s third season. They’ll reportedly be making just as much as their male co-stars. Thandie reacted to that news as well.

“They’re all happening right now, and yeah, we’re all equal across the board,” she told Vanity Fair. “It’s really exciting. It’s unprecedented. It’s—goodness; it shatters so much calcified pain, resentment, frustration. It just shatters it.”

Hopefully, others like Thandie Newton will remain watchdogs on #TimesUp and make sure everyone is represented.
