Fraternity Expels Three Members Following Southern University Hazing Death
Three members of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity have been expelled following their alleged involvement in the hazing death of Southern University student Caleb Wilson. The fraternity's website lists Caleb McCray and Kyle Thurman as expelled from the Beta Sigma Chapter, and Isaiah Smith, the "Dean of Pledges," as expelled from the Lambda Alpha Chapter. These expulsions are notable, as only 203 members have been expelled from Omega Psi Phi since its founding in 1911.
The expulsions occurred after the arrest of the three men in connection with Wilson's death on February 27, during a fraternity ritual. McCray faces charges of criminal hazing and manslaughter, while Thurman and Smith face misdemeanor hazing charges.
Southern University confirmed that all three suspects were current students at the time of the incident. The university has suspended all Greek life activities and issued a cease-and-desist order to the fraternity chapter involved.
The fraternity's expulsions were announced following their annual district meeting in New Orleans. The case has drawn national attention to hazing practices and the responsibilities of fraternities in ensuring the safety of their members.
At a news briefing on Friday, the Baton Rouge police department chief, TJ Morse, said his agency learned of Wilson’s death from medical staff at a local hospital where a group of young men had dropped him off, per The Guardian.
