This Week In Good Black News: Venus Williams Shares Engagement Joy, Snoop Dogg Buys Into Football, and Robert Smalls Makes History in South Carolina
This week’s roundup is all about legacy moves, history-making firsts, and major wins worth celebrating.
From Venus Williams finding love and motivation on and off the court, to Snoop Dogg stepping into football club ownership overseas, the power plays are loud and proud. Robert Smalls is finally being honored with a statue at the South Carolina Statehouse, and gospel legend Fred Hammond just became an honorary member of Phi Beta Sigma. And if you needed more proof that independence pays, Joe Budden is reportedly on track to earn $20 million this year from his self-made podcast empire.
Black excellence is clocked in and showing out.
Snoop Dogg Joins Swansea City as Co-Owner
Snoop Dogg is officially stepping into the world of football and not just as a fan, but as a co-owner. The rap icon has taken a minority stake in Swansea City, a UK-based team competing in the Championship league, and he’s already making his presence known, according to BBC Sports.
The 53-year-old mogul made a splash this past weekend as the surprise face of Swansea’s new home kit for the 2025-26 season. Talk about a rollout.
In a statement, the club’s ownership team described the partnership as a bold new chapter. “This is the next episode for Swansea City,” they said — a not-so-subtle nod to one of Snoop’s classics. They’re hoping his global reach can bring a fresh wave of attention (and dollars) to the squad.
Snoop, who’s always worn his love for the sport on his sleeve, said this move feels personal. “Swansea’s story really hit home for me. It’s a proud, working-class club with grit — an underdog that fights back. Just like me,” he shared. “I’m honored to be a part of this team.”
This ownership deal also puts Snoop in elite company, joining the same group as football legend Luka Modrić. But beyond the celebrity names, the goal is clear: raise the team’s profile, draw in new fans, and build a competitive, sustainable future on and off the field.
Fred Hammond Is Now An Honorary Member Of Phi Beta Sigma
Fred Hammond just earned his spot in the Blue and White family.
The legendary gospel artist was inducted as an Honorary Member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. during their 2025 International Conclave in Tampa, Florida. The recognition honors his trailblazing contributions to gospel music and his decades-long commitment to uplifting Black communities through faith and service.
“We’re proud to welcome him and this year’s class into the Phi Beta Sigma brotherhood,” said International President Chris V. Rey, J.D. “Their work speaks for itself.”
Robert Smalls to Be Honored with First Statue of a Black American at South Carolina Statehouse
Robert Smalls is finally getting his flowers and a statue to match.
South Carolina is set to honor the Civil War hero and statesman with a monument on Statehouse grounds, marking the first time a Black individual will be recognized with a statue at the Capitol, BET reported. Up until now, only white men — many with ties to the Confederacy and Jim Crow — have held that space.
The move comes a decade after the removal of the Confederate battle flag from the same complex, signaling a long-overdue shift in how the state remembers its history.
"This moment is powerful," said Rep. Brandon Cox, a Republican from Berkeley County who teamed up with Democrat Rep. Jermaine Johnson to push the bipartisan effort through. Previous attempts, including those led by Smalls’ great-great-grandson Michael B. Moore, had stalled for years.

Joe Budden’s Podcast Network Projected to Earn $20M This Year
Joe Budden might’ve casually dropped a screenshot of his Patreon traffic back in June, but that glimpse barely scratched the surface of his podcasting bag.
According to The New York Times, Budden’s network is projected to bring in over $20 million this year, per his CEO Ian Schwartzman. That includes a cool $1 million+ a month from Patreon alone, where fans pay anywhere from $5 to $50 for premium content.
While two episodes of "The Joe Budden Podcast" drop for free each week, diehard supporters subscribe for bonus episodes, exclusive spinoffs, and behind-the-scenes access. On top of that, the Joe Budden Network keeps even more coins in-house by selling its own ads — a rare move in the podcasting world.
From artist to mogul, Budden’s proving that independence can pay off big time.
Venus Williams Confirms Engagement to Actor-Producer Andrea Preti
Love is in full swing for Venus Williams.
The tennis icon revealed she’s officially engaged to Italian actor and producer Andrea Preti, according to People, after stepping back onto the court for her first singles match in over a year. The 45-year-old star shared the exciting news during a post-match interview on July 22.
The reporter asked about how her fiancé has supported her comeback, Venus lit up:
“My fiancé is here and he really encouraged me to keep playing,” she said.
She didn’t hold back about the grind either.
“There were so many times I just wanted to chill,” she admitted. “Playing tennis is like a full-time job where you’re constantly running, lifting weights, dying — then doing it all again the next day. He pushed me to keep going.”
