Apple TV+ Announces Magic Johnson Docuseries Is In The Works

It chronicles the superstar’s rise to fame and accomplishments off the court.

A four-part docuseries about basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson is coming to Apple TV+.

Using previously unseen footage and interviews, it chronicles the NBA Hall of Famer’s accomplishments on and off the court, as well as his global impact, according to Variety.

Unnamed “heavyweights in business and politics” will also chime in on Johnson’s impact, which spans entrepreneurship and changing the conversation about HIV/AIDS after he contracted the deadly illness in 1991.

“I’m so excited to announce that my upcoming docuseries will be released globally on Apple TV+!” Maic said on Instagram.

The streaming service did not announce a title or a release date for the series that Rick Famuyiwa is set to direct. New Slate Ventures and XTR Production, in association with H. Wood Media and Delirio Films, are slated to produce the series.

According to The Los Angeles Times, the series chronicles Magic’s life from his humble upbringing in Lansing, Michigan to the pinnacle of NBA stardom and beyond.

The Los Angeles Lakers selected Magic in the 1979 NBA draft. He played 13 years for the team, lifting the championship trophy five times with the Lakers. He temporarily retired in November 1991 after his HIV-positive diagnosis, but he came back to help the U.S. men’s national basketball team win a gold medal in the 1992 Olympic Games and played another NBA season, according to Sports Illustrated.

He went on to become a successful businessman, a part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and LA Spark, as well as an advocate for people suffering from HIV/AIDS.
