Bobby Brown Shares ‘Mistake’ Origin of Gumby Haircut
Bobby Brown shared a hilarious story about the formation of his iconic Gumby haircut while visiting ‘The Jennifer Hudson Show’ on Monday, May 19.
The New Edition member sat down with host Jennifer Hudson to talk about his musical beginning, along with the loss of his two children, Bobbi Kristina Brown and Bobby Jr., but the singer had a lighthearted moment when discussing the origin of his ‘Gumby’ hairstyle. Brown wore the look in the 1980s after temporarily parting ways with New Edition.
“That was a mistake,” he joked. “It was a mistake that turned out to be great. I was at the barber shop and I just looked the wrong way while he was cutting,” he said.
Brown added that he was “looking at somebody” that he “shouldn’t have,” which caused the hi-top fade, named after the claymation Gumby cartoon.
“But he cut my hair the wrong way and I left it,” Brown continued.
The R&B vocalist went on to share that upon visiting the late Quincy Jones’ house, the musician and producer pointed out a picture of his great-grandfather, who wore the same haircut. “I was like, ‘This old man trying to jack my style,’” Brown recalled. “[Jones] was like, ‘Ain’t nobody trying to jack nothin’. He was like, ‘That hairstyle has been out for so long.’”
While Brown popularized the haircut, other artists like Will Smith and Big Daddy Kane wore the cut. Brown previously discussed his moment with Jones on ‘Club Shay Shay’ last month.
