Erykah Badu Celebrates 16th Birthday of Baduizm
Erykah Badu is celebrating her baby's sweet sixteen, and we're not talking about one of her three children.
The neo-soul queen commemorates a 16th birthday of her debut album, Baduizm, with a series of gigs during which she performs the entire album start to finish. The shows, dubbed the Sweet 16 Run tour, average about eight hours each.
The Dallas native rose to mainstream fame with Baduizm, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard charts and was highly acclaimed by critics. The disc spawned such hits as "Next Lifetime" and the Grammy-winning "On & On."
"I have a cult following. They experienced exactly what I experienced, musically, right along with me," Badu tells the Toronto Star. "It seems that we’ve grown together, and they’ve allowed me to grow, to use my platform to publicly grow, and they appreciate it and give it right back to me."
The celebrated singer, who last released New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh) in 2010, says she will have a new album out by the end of the year.
