12 Days of Pride: Rep. Malcolm & Matthew Kenyatta Are Love, Leadership, and Legacy in Motion

From policy to public art, the couple’s partnership is proof that Black queer love is both revolutionary and real.

Malcolm Kenyatta is no stranger to breaking barriers. As a Pennsylvania State Representative and Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee, he’s one of the boldest voices in American politics. But in 12 Days of Pride, we also get to meet the other half of this dynamic duo: his husband, Dr. Matthew Kenyatta, a visionary at the intersection of culture and community as Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Philadelphia’s Temple University.

This BET.com series, 12 Days of Pride, showcases the nuance and diversity of Black queer love, leadership, and legacy during Pride Month and beyond. Together, Malcolm and Matthew are Black queer love. Married for three years, their bond is a partnership grounded in purpose and pride. In this feature, they reflect on navigating public life, building a home rooted in care, and holding space for joy amid the fight for justice. As Malcolm shares, “For me, it is about being authentic and understanding the value of that. I always say that as contagious as fear is, courage is also contagious. When people just exist in their fullness, it gives other people—whether they’re part of the LGBT community or not—permission to exist in their fullness.” Their love is political, yes, but also beautifully personal.
