Sibling Rivals are Running Against Each Other in a Florida Special Primary Election
Sister and brother rivals, LaVon Bracy Davis and Randolph Bracy, are running against each other in today’s Florida State Senate Race.
The political sibling rivals are running in the special primary election for the seat that had been held by Geraldine Thompson. Thompson, a veteran lawmaker who died earlier this year, is also tied to the siblings’ mother, civil rights activist LaVon Wright Bracy, who was the maid of honor at Thompson’s wedding and was one of her oldest friends, according to AP News.
Both siblings have experience in political office. Bracy Davis was a state representative, and Bracy was a former state senator. As a family, the Bracy’s have been involved in politics and political action for decades. Randolph Bracy Jr., the siblings’ father, was a local NAACP president, a founder of a Baptist church in Orlando, and director of the religion department at Bethune-Cookman University.
The question of who will be endorsed has come up before. Most recently, Bracy and Thompson ran against each other for the Democratic primary in a state senate race last year. In that race, Bracy Davis endorsed Thompson over her brother.
According to AP News, in September, for the general election, the winner will face Republican Willie Montague, in the Democratic-dominant district where Black voters make up more than half of the registered Democrats.
This sibling political rivalry is one to watch!
