Audra McDonald Leads 2025 Tony Awards Nominees with Historic Nomination

See which other Black Broadway icons received nominations ahead of theater’s biggest night.

The 2025 Tony Awards nominations are out, and Broadway’s finest Black talents are shining bright among the nominees.

Tony Award-winning icons Sarah Paulson and Wendell Pierce revealed this year’s contenders on “CBS Mornings,” with big names like Audra McDonald and LaTanya Richardson Jackson receiving nods for their powerful performances.

McDonald, already a six-time Tony winner, made history this year after earning 11 nominations for her stirring portrayal in “Gypsy.”  Making her the singular most nominated performer in Tony Awards history. Meanwhile, Richardson-Jackson secured a nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for her work in “Purpose.”

Hosted by “Wicked” star Cynthia Erivo, the 2025 Tony Awards will air live from Radio City Music Hall on CBS and Paramount+ on June 8 at 8 p.m. ET. Until then, check out all the talented Black stars nominated this year.
