Regina Hall Says 'Girls Trip 2' Is on Hold Until Someone Gets the Script Right

With Tiffany Haddish claiming cameras will roll before summer and fans counting down since 2017, Hall cut through the noise on the Today Show's podcast: no script, no sequel.

Nearly a decade since the Flossy Posse shut down the Essence Music Festival and grossed over $140 million worldwide, Girls Trip 2 remains one of Hollywood's most discussed sequels that nobody has actually made yet. Regina Hall would like everyone to understand why.

In a recent appearance on the Today show's Glass Half Full podcast, Hall gave the most direct answer she has probably ever given on the subject. "There's not going to be a sequel until the script is right and we haven't gotten that yet," she said, per That Grape Juice. Then, in case that wasn't clear enough: "They have not gotten a script that's right."

"They have not gotten a script that's right."

— Regina Hall, on the Girls Trip 2 delay

Hall's comments land at an interesting moment. Tiffany Haddish said in a February 2026 interview that she had read a script she actually laughed at, a feat she said almost never happens for her, and told reporters that filming was expected to begin before summer 2026. Producer Will Packer has also said he finally has a script he is happy with and has hinted at an "exotic locale" for the shoot, with Ghana and Afrochella previously floated as possibilities.

So who is right? Probably both of them. The Girls Trip 2 situation appears to be one where different people close to the project have access to different information. Haddish may have read a draft. Hall, by her own account, has not. "I found out in real-time with everyone else" about key details of the sequel, she admitted previously, a candid admission that suggests the four leads are not all looped in equally on development.

The original Girls Trip, directed by Malcolm D. Lee and co-written by Tracy Oliver, was released in 2017 and launched Tiffany Haddish's mainstream career. The sequel has been gestating ever since, delayed at various points by pandemic complications, scheduling conflicts among four very busy actresses, and, now apparently, a script that still has not satisfied everyone in the room.

Hall told the podcast she remains hopeful and wants to make something "the fans love." The first date for the sequel's filming has not been officially announced. For now, the script is the thing. And per Regina Hall, they do not have it yet.
