Marsai Martin Thinks Her ‘Black-ish’ Character Would Be ‘Taking on the Campus’

The actress predicted that her former character, Diane Johnson, would attend an HBCU.

Marsai Martin believes that her former “Black-ish” character, Diane Johnson, would remain central to the story just three years after the show ended.

The actress, who stars in the upcoming Prime Video action-thriller “G20,” was a guest on “Good Morning America” on Tuesday, where she was asked where the “Black-ish” character would be today.” As Martin’s father in “G20” is Anthony Anderson, who also played Diane’s father, Andre Johnson, in “Black-ish.” The show lasted for eight seasons, from 2014 to 2022, and had two spinoffs, “Grown-ish” and “Mixed-ish.”

“How old would she be? Probably around my age, 19 or 20,” told “GMA” co-host Michael Strahan around the 3-minute mark. "She'd definitely be at an HBCU. I'd definitely say that. Taking on the campus!"

The actress added that Diane “definitely would be the talk of the town” three years later.

Earlier in the conversation, Marsai said that being with Anderson on the “G20” set provided her a “sense of familiarity” with someone who’s known her for “ten years plus.” Strahan mentioned that the previous day, Tracee Ellis Ross, who played Diane’s mother, Rainbow Johnson, visited “GMA,” while Anderson would appear on the talk show the following day.

“All the parentals! It's going to be a family reunion,” Marsai joked.
