Vince Staples Said Dave Chappelle Speaks In Riddles

The rapper-actor says Chappelle’s conversational process shapes his approach to storytelling, but he’s not ready to try stand-up.

Vince Staples said his friendship with legendary comedian Dave Chappelle has given him a front row seat to one of the greatest stand-up processes, not that he’s ready to try Chappelle’s tactics himself anytime soon.

The 32-year-old multihyphenate told Vulture’s “Good One” podcast that his relationship with Chappelle is everyday and conversational, rather than an industry hustle. He said they “mostly talk about life and hip hop.”

Staples praised how Chappelle builds material from ordinary moments, calling the comic someone who “speaks in riddles and sh*t” and he noted, “It's interesting to hear him speak because he always has a story to tell. I've kind of seen his process, like his stand-up process, which is interesting because it's kind of similar to that."

He explained how he watched Chappelle pull lines out of conversations, “work out things,” and then turn them into a show…fast. Staples finds Chappelle’s process fascinating.

When the podcast turned to whether Staples might follow Chappelle’s footsteps and try stand-up, he was blunt about the craft’s demands. “Oh, I hear it all the time, but I'll never do that,” he said. “I think it's just probably storytelling, but it's a lot of work. I'm not saying that to demean it. I'm saying in a sense of like, that's not something that you can just pick up and be like, 'I do that,' so I would really need to take in the time … I don't know if I got that in me right now.”

Never say never because Staples lowkey changed his tune. “It's a really interesting muscle to develop, you know? … Maybe one day.”

Staples went on to call Chappelle a “very simple dude,” a family man, and a "psychopath” when he joked about Chappelle’s intensity in how he works. He observes… and then he’s got a plethora of material to work with. Staples recalled seeing Chappelle spend hours talking casually in a small comedy club and immediately after, having a full batch of material. "I've never seen some sh*t like that in my life," Staples joked.
