Kevin Hart Roast Sparks Outrage After George Floyd Bit

Floyd’s family says the joke went way too far and argues Hart should never have let it happen.

Did Kevin Hart’s recent comedy special take things too far?

The family of George Floyd is calling out Kevin Hart and comedian Tony Hinchcliffe after a joke about Floyd during “The Netflix Roast of Kevin Hart” set off a wave of outrage online.

According to TMZ, Travis Cains, a spokesman for The Gianna and George Floyd Foundation, called Hart’s decision to let Hinchcliffe back into a roast “sad for the culture.”

The family says the bit crossed a line and felt especially painful because it repeated language tied to Floyd’s death.

In the joke, Hinchcliffe said, “The Black community is so proud of you… right now George Floyd is looking up at us all laughing so hard he can’t breathe.”

The family and friends also argued that Hart should have stepped in before the joke landed, especially given Hinchcliffe’s history of making remarks about Floyd during other comedy events. Reaction spread quickly across social media, where viewers described the bit as offensive and unnecessary.

“It’s always wild watching white people find humor in Black pain being murdered by a police officer and begging for air is somehow comedy material,” said one user on X.

“Where's the joke? Where's the commentary and punchline?” said another.

The outrage lands in a climate where more people are discussing comedic boundaries, questioning where comedy stops being edgy and starts becoming cruel. That tension has followed Hart for years, but this latest controversy puts the spotlight on how celebrities handle material that touches on race, grief, and violence. For many viewers, the issue was not just the joke itself, but the decision to give it a stage.
