Black Twitter Erupts on Lena Dunham Over This Moment on ‘Girls’

The show went out with an unexpected bang.

Lena Dunham's Girls has been a problematic series for people of color. Either we've been completely ignored (season one), used as convenient props (season two) or, in the case of the show's series finale episode, made an utterly bewildering appearance that is raising eyebrows across the internet.
In other words, it's time to talk about Hannah's baby.

  • The following paragraph contains spoilers, so if you haven't gotten to watching the episode on DVR yet, this would be a good place to stop reading.

For the rest of us, did you do a double-take when you saw Hannah's son, Grover? The baby boy, whose father is a surf instructor named Paul-Louis (played by British-Pakistani actor Riz Ahmed), appeared to be Black. Or, at least, much more melanin-gifted than you would expect from a white girl from Michigan and a South Asian dude.
Now, lord knows skin tone can be a complex thing, especially when it comes to babies. But folks on Twitter clearly aren't willing to give Dunham and her team the benefit of the doubt on this one:

  • What do you think? Was the Black (or brown) baby offensive?
