Kehlani, Wale, Ella Mai And More Mourn The Tragic Death Of Rising Rapper Lexii Alijai

Alijai's family confirmed the sad news on New Year's Day. She was 21.

It is with heavy hearts that we report the passing of 21-year-old Minnesota-bred rapper Lexii Alijai, full name Alexis Alijai Lynch. The heartbreaking news was confirmed by the rapper’s cousin Raeisah Clark through social media on New Years Day (Jan. 1).

“Rest in paradise. You’ll never be forgotten!” Clark posted to Facebook, according to Page Six. “I’m so lost for words…my beautiful cousin with so much talent & unique soul...Lexii Alijai...it’s too soon.” While her family has spoken on her death, the circumstances of how she died or the exact date of her death has not been confirmed.

The music community has been mourning the loss of the late talented young rapper since the somber news of Alijai’s untimely death broke. R&B songstress Kehlani was among those left devastated.

“[I just] got the worst f**kin’ news ever. My heart is BROKE,” she wrote on Twitter. “I keep typing and backspacing. You knew what you meant to me. Everyone knew what you meant. You were so special, bro. I seen you fight [through] it all. I seen u thug it out, Lex. “I’mma miss you so bad. You [were] about to get everything you always talked about. RIP MY BABY.”

  • The two were close friends and had previously linked up together on the Oakland singer’s track “Jealous” back in 2015 for Kehlani’s mixtape, You Should Be Here. The project went on to be nominated for a Grammy. Since then, Kehlani has been posting tributes and mementos in honor of Ajilai’s memory; she lovingly referred to her as her “little sister” in a separate tribute.

“This s**t was so much deeper than music,” Kehlani expressed. “That was my little sister.”

Condolences for Alijai have continued to pour in as the somber news spread across social media. Wale was also rendered speechless by the news.

“Lexii ... my God man…,” he wrote on Twitter.

Dreamville Records’ Bas also expressed his grief amid her passing. “This is hard to comprehend. So young, talented, humble, and gracious,” he wrote. “I was positive it was only a matter of time before the world celebrated your talent and your character. RIP Lexii.”

Additionally, R&B songbird Ella Mai tweeted her heartfelt condolences at the tragic loss of yet another bright light gone too soon. “A sweet soul, gone way too soon. Rest in paradise, Lexii,” she wrote.

  • Alijai was just beginning to make a name for herself through freestyles that she uploaded to SoundCloud. The budding artist released her first project, Joseph’s Coat, in 2015 when she was just 17 years old, and her second release, Growing Pains, in 2017.

BET sends its prayers, love and light to the family, friends and fans of Lexii Alijai during this difficult time.
