It seems The Neptunes are coming strong in 2020.
In a new interview with independent publication Clash, Chad Hugo dropped a major bombshell, revealing that he and Pharrell have been back in the studio together. In a surprise reveal, the legendary production duo has been cooking up some new music with some of the hottest artists in the game. Speaking to Clash, Hugo revealed that he’s “focusing on The Neptunes stuff [and] getting back on The Neptunes grind.”
“We’re doing a couple of things,” he said. “There’s a videogame soundtrack I’m doing [solo] that’s in the works right now that I can’t speak about, I’m not supposed to, but uh, it’s in the works right now. We just did some work with Miley Cyrus, Jay-Z, Blink 182, Lil Uzi Vert, Brandy, Ray-J, Snoh Alegra, [and] G-Eazy.”
He added: "We were just in the studio with The Weeknd, and that sounds really futuristic." Hugo also said Kaytranada, Rex Orange County and Lil Nas X have paid them a visit at the studio.
“He’s himself. He’s a Savant,” Pharrell added of his musical counterpart. “Being around him only makes everyone else better. He radiates genius. He’s been that way since I met him in beginning band at 12 years old.”
The news comes as a shock to many as Hugo had previously announced back in May of 2017 that he was stepping away from music indefinitely. Most recently, The Neptunes reunited for Pharrell’s song “Letter to My Godfather” for Netflix’s documentary of the same title on the story of the iconic music executive Clarence Avant. In November 2019, the duo was nominated to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
We can’t wait to hear what they have in store for 2020.
