Ne-Yo Says Quarantine Was A ‘Blessing’ That Saved His Marriage With Crystal Smith

“Before the quarantine happened, we were definitely talking divorce.”

It appears Ne-Yo and his wife, Crystal Smith, will no longer be separating. The Grammy-winning R&B singer appeared on The Talk on Tuesday (June 23) where he shared that he and his wife have since reconciled with one another while quarantining amid the coronavirus pandemic.

  • “My heart and condolences goes out to anybody that lost anybody to COVID-19 but I gotta say, for me, the whole quarantine thing was kind of a blessing,” he confessed. With the music industry at a standstill, Ne-Yo was able to spend more time with his family which he credited for really helping him “lock back in” with his wife and kids.

“Before the quarantine happened, we were definitely talking divorce,” he admitted. “The quarantine kind of forced us to sit still [and] block out the noise from the world. You know the world can get very, very loud, and we tend to let the world’s opinion mean more in certain situations than it should. I was very much guilty of that as well.”

  • Ne-Yo said they were able to sit down and have some “blatantly, painfully, brutally honest” conversations over these last few months to work out their differences.

Earlier this year, Ne-Yo appeared on the Private Talk Podcast where he confirmed that him and his wife had filed for divorce, citing personal differences.

“Long story short, she’s got demons just like everyone else, just like me and we realize our demons don’t mesh and until we both get ahold of our personal demons, it’s gonna be just difficult for us to stay married,” he said at the time. “That’s the end of that chapter, not the end of that book. Like I said, that’s the mother of my kids and I love her to death. We’re gonna be family forever.”

  • But, because of quarantine, Ne-Yo said that him and his wife were able to “get to a place where we can communicate the right way.”

“We’re actually stronger now than we were before. Now we feel like we can really talk to each other,” Ne-Yo reflected. “I don't know when it happened, but we got to a place where we felt like we couldn't just say it...and that almost broke us.”
