Rihanna Sues Topshop Over Image-Bearing Tank Tops

The retail brand says it paid the photographer for the image and doesn't owe her licensing fees.

Rihanna is reportedly suing Topshop over a tank top design that bears her image, but the British fashion brand says it had authorization to do so. The lawsuit between Rihanna and Arcadia, which owns the retail company, has been going on for more than a year in the UK, but the two sides have yet to reach a settlement.

A third party provided Topshop with the tank tops that featured Rih Rih's image on the front and the photograph was obtained and purchased from the photographer who took the shot. This frees the company from paying the artist any licensing fees according to UK law. Still, Rihanna is suing Topshop for $5 million in compensation.

No doubt that the singer would love to put a lid on the case before her second collection with rival brand River Island hits stores May 25.
