Willow Smith Catches Heat for "Summer Fling" Release

12-year-old star's new single deemed too mature.

Willow Smith may be growing up a little too fast.

It seems like just yesterday Will Smith's and Jada Pinkett-Smith's baby girl was playfully whipping her hair back and forth with an age-appropriate debut single that ushered her musical talents to the forefront. Within a year, the youngest member of the Smith clan had a hit single, a record deal and a budding acting career to boot.
After taking a small break from entertainment (reportedly to "just be 12," as told by her father), Willow is back with "Summer Fling," a more mature record gaining negative attention over its content, and the music video's leading man, who looks to be a legal adult, rather than a pre-teen.

In the video, young Willow rocks short shorts, a platinum blonde wig and a British accent (momentarily) as she sings about the joys of no commitments. "We walk the beach at midnight, and watch the stars in the clear skies," she sings. "We both say, 'love you,' but it’s alright… If you wanna talk I guess that’s alright, if you wanna walk under the night sky, I don’t really care cause we got tonight."
The idea of a 12-year-old girl having a "fling" isn't exactly what some consider appropriate behavior. “Willow is singing about having sex and this is totally inappropriate and not in line with the developmental physical, mental or emotional stages of a 12-year-old girl who is barely an adolescent," noted human behavior expert Patrick Wanis. "The video reveals that she is still a little girl not a teenager. She is not mature enough mentally or emotionally to be boasting that she and her ‘fling’ are walking ‘the beach at midnight.'"
Wanis called Willow's celebrity parents "irresponsible and verging on negligent" for "failing to fulfill their roles as parents."
The Smiths have been open about their unconventional child-rearing ways, and letting their offspring make the decisions. "My style of parenting is very similar to that of my parents, minus the concept of ownership," Will explained in an interview. "I think that, specifically in African-American households, the idea coming out of slavery, there's a concept of your children being property and that was a major part that Jada and I released with our kids. We respect our children the way we would respect any other person. Things like cleaning up their room. You would never tell a full-grown adult to clean their room, so we don't tell our kids to clean their rooms."
Willow appears to be the most eclectic of the three Smith children. She routinely switches up her look, and even rocked a fake tongue ring last year (yet another choice that didn't go over well with the public).
She hasn't spoken about the "Summer Fling," which is nearing 700,000 views on YouTube since July 6.
