Mayoral candidate Marco McMillian, 34, was found dead near a Mississippi River levee Wednesday after authorities spent more than a day looking for his body. A man crashed McMillian's SUV Tuesday morning sending it crashing into another vehicle on U.S. Highway 49. Authorities are investigating the death as a homicide and have someone in custody, but no charges have been made.
McMillian was an openly gay Democratic candidate who was running for mayor in conservative Clarksdale, Mississippi. He worked as a consultant for nonprofit organizations, served four years as international executive director of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., and raised funds at Alabama A&M University as well as Jackson State University. He was running to fill the seat soon to be vacated by Mayor Henry Espy Jr.
His body has been sent to Jackson, Mississippi, for an autopsy.
