Parents of Jordan Davis Reach Settlement With Son's Alleged Killer

Jordan Davis’ parents have settled a lawsuit against Michael David Dunn, the man charged with shooting and killing the 17-year-old in November 2012.

The parents of Jordan Davis, a 17-year-old who was slain at a gas station in Jacksonville, Florida, in November 2012, have reached a settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit against their son’s alleged killer, according to The Florida Times-Union.

Ron Davis and Lucia McBath won an undisclosed amount from Michael Dunn, 47, on Dec. 30. The parents of the other two boys, who were in the vehicle with Davis when he was shot, also reached settlements. Jordan’s parents say they went through pain and suffering when their son was killed and after Dunn accused their son of being violent.
McBath and Ron Davis “wanted closure as soon as possible,” John Phillips, their attorney said to the Times-Union. “We were frankly a little surprised [Dunn] accepted our offer.”

Dunn is charged with first-degree murder and will begin criminal trial on Feb. 3. He is claiming self-defense and said he saw a weapon in the teens' car, even though police did not find a gun in their possession.

Jordan's death has been compared to the slaying of Trayvon Martin and brought further attention to controversy over Florida's "Stand Your Ground" laws. In October 2013, McBath testifed with Trayvon's mother Sybrina Fulton in front of the U.S. Senate to call for the law to be repealed or reformed.
