After posting a clip of a Houston pastor telling single women how to attract marriage, singer Ciara found herself on the receiving end of criticism. However, once the conversation surrounding the clip — which many are calling sexist — evolved, a debate began on why women are continuously told how to act in order to attract a husband.

Pastor John Gray of Houston’s Lakewood megachurch is very admired by many other religious figures as well as celebrities. Although he is adorned, his specific sermon instructing women how to stop "walking in the spirit of girlfriend" raised much controversy.

  1. The clip went viral after Ciara shared it to her Instagram and Twitter

"A wife is not the presence of a ring, but it is the presence of your character. Too many women wanna be married, but you're walking in the spirit of 'girlfriend,'" Pastor Gray says in the video.

"When you carry yourself like a wife, a husband will find you," he adds.

Ciara posted the clip with the caption "#LevelUp" and she dragged for endorsing a message many found problematic.

  2. Eventually, the conversation shifted from Ciara's tweet to focus on Pastor Gray's words
  3. The pastor was called out for not directing his words toward men
  4. Additionally, the sermon was slammed for treating marriage as an ultimate prize that requires women to change
  5. However, there were several people who believed the pastor's words were inoffensive and taken out of context
