Andrew Gillum has officially become the first African-American nominee for Florida governor after coming out victorious against favorite Gwen Graham and two well-funded business men vying for the state's Democratic nomination.
The progressive, Bernie Sanders co-signed candidate will face off against Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla) in the upcoming gubernatorial election this November.
Gillum is the Democratic party's third Black gubernatorial nominee this year with Stacey Abrams in Georgia and Ben Jealous in Maryland. In the history of the United States, there have only been two African-American men ever elected as governor, according to NPR.
If the Tallahassee mayor is successfully elected, he will be come the first Black governor in Florida's history.

How I am walking into work tomorrow to ask my co workers if they have alumni from their university to ever win in a upset like Andrew Gillum did in Florida. pic.twitter.com/O1nLsy932w— Grayson Alexander (@AlexGrayson3) August 29, 2018
In a state where 1 in 5 Black folks are disenfranchised because of racist policy, a Black man has won the democratic primary. He was spent 10:1 and his opponents were endorsed by all you’re fave “left” orgs. #BlackNovember— Kayla Reed (@iKaylaReed) August 29, 2018
Congratulations to @AndrewGillum on his victory. Tonight, Floridians joined Andrew in standing up and demanding real change and showed our nation what is possible when we stand together. Let's make history this November and make Andrew Gillum the next Governor of Florida.— Bernie Sanders (@BernieSanders) August 29, 2018
