The Michigan teen who fatally stabbed a classmate with a kitchen knife over a boy was reportedly “smiling and laughing” during the vicious attack.
According to the other students in the class, Tanaya Lewis, 17, pulled out a steak knife during class Wednesday at Fitzgerald High School and attacked Danyna Gibson, 16.
“Witnesses said the defendant was smiling and laughing as she was chasing the victim,” Detective Donald Seidel of the Warren Police Department told a judge Friday, WXYZ-TV reported.
According to officials, one of the incisions penetrated Danyna’s heart.
After the attack, teachers were quick to show Lewis out of the classroom but even from the hall she kept screaming, “I’m going to kill her.”
Both the suspect and the victim were straight-A students who never had prior issues. Police have reason to believe the stabbing that took Gibson’s life was over a boy, said Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer.
Dwyer told the Associated Press Lewis was upset when a boy she was dating broke up with her and started dating the victim.
Lewis is being held without bail on a capital murder charge.
When her arraigning judge asked her if she understood that she is facing life behind bars without parole, she responded "yes.”
Danyna's family has started a GoFundMe for her funeral.
