Jean Cramer shocked a Thursday evening public forum meeting when she suggested Marysville, Michigan should stay as “white” as possible. 

Cramer’s racist statement was in response to a question about Marysville’s diversity, a city 55 miles northeast of Detroit. 

“Do you believe the diversity of our community needs to be looked at?” she was asked.

Cramer responded with a shocking recommendation, “My suggestion... keep Marysville a white community as much as possible.”

Kathy Hayman, the town’s acting mayor, replied to Cramer, saying, “I don’t even know that I can talk yet, I’m so upset and shocked.” Hayman added that her father was Syrian, “So basically, what you’ve said is that my father and his family had no business in this community.”

Mayor Dan Damman described Cramer's comments as "vile" and "jaw-dropping." 

After the debate, Cramer told the Port Huron Times Herald that she's not "against Blacks," but does believe married couples should be the same race.

“A husband and wife need to be the same race … That’s how it’s been [since] … God created the heaven and the earth. He created Adam and Eve at the same time.”

Marysville is a small town comprised of 98% white and 0.3% African American population.

According to the Times Herald, Cramer is one of the five candidates running for three council seats in November.
