Vanessa Bryant Introduces TIME 's Person Of The Year In Memoriam With Kobe And Gianna

“Words cannot do justice to the grief we felt this year.”

TIME beautifully honored many of the country’s biggest losses this year with the help of Vanessa Bryant. Her husband Kobe and 14-year-old daughter Gianna died in a helicopter crash in January.

Bryant, 38, narrated the video with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott performing "Over the Rainbow.”
Bryant can be heard saying, "We said goodbye to husbands, daughters, wives, sons, grandparents, friends and national heroes. And we continue to count the lives surrendered to this cruel pandemic, which has claimed well over a million souls, worldwide."

She also added, “Tonight, we mourn the people we all knew and the many we never will. May our collective grief unite us on the path forward.”

Images of Kobe in his Lakers uniform and Gianna appeared when Kobe’s voice is heard saying,“Everything is a game seven. When you approach every practice, every game with that kind of mentality, it bleeds into the rest of the guys.”
The video included Chadwick Boseman, mathematician Kathryn Johnson, Little Richard, Alex Trebek, John Lewis, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and more.
