Stephen A. Smith’s Most On Brand Moments Of The Year

The biggest moments of the year from the biggest star, and mouth, in sports broadcasting.

Everybody either loves or hates Stephen A. Smith. He’s polarizing, but that’s what makes him so successful.

It’s been a hell of a ride for the Bronx born, Queens raised, HBCU graduate who went from having his own ESPN show, Quite Frankly, cancelled in 2007 to signing a multi-million dollar mega deal with ESPN in 2019, while remaining unapologetically Black and unflinchingly honest.

Like it or not, here are just a few of my favorite Stephen A. Smith rants of 2019.

The opinions expressed here do not necessarily reflect those of BET Networks.

  • When The New York Knicks Broke His Heart..Again

As a sports fan and native New Yorker, the Knicks are constantly in rotation for Stephen A. unfortunately he hasn’t had anything good to talk about for a while. No Knicks fan has, really.  But the hopes were crazy high for the 2019 off-season, many draft picks were in play, there was money in the game and it really felt like this may be the best Knicks off-season.

  • When He Responded To The Colin Kaepernick NFL Workout Debacle

Colin Kaepernick has been a hot topic in and out of the world of sports, so of course, when his NFL workout turned into a bit of a disaster, Stephen A. Smith said it “reeked” of a PR stunt, which he, justifiably, caught a lot of flack for. His subsequent explanation was swift and direct and among the many gems gleaned from this particular moment, the quote “I’m a Black Man You Idiot” should be put on a t-shirt for men and women and children to wear.

  • When He Had To Remind Max Kellerman Who Kobe Is

One of Stephen A.’s favorite past times is checking people. One of his favorite people to check is Max Kellerman, and a thorough checking occurred during a May episode of First Take when Max wanted to draw a comparison between Kawahi Leonard and Kobe Bryant of all people.

  • When He Broke Down Who Really Has The Power In The NBA

Star players have a lot of leverage in the super team era, and with that comes big contracts. While many people like to criticize athletes for what they do and how they live their lives and how much money they’re worth (or spend) Stephen A. took a moment to clarify who still really has the power.

  • The Many Times He Trolled The Dallas Cowboys

One thing most football fans can agree on is that it’s fun to hate the Dallas Cowboys. Smith takes extra joy in this activity, evident from his trolling of Cowboy fans earlier this season. His “no playoffs” prediction came true in week 16.

  • When He Was Asked If He Was A Sell Out

Is there a difference between “selling out” and “looking out”?  Yes. If you don’t understand that, does Stephen A. think you can go ahead and kiss his...?  At least that’s what he told Charlamagne and company on The Breakfast Club.

  • When Michael Irving "Lost his Damn Mind"

Another classic Stephen A. Smith moment from this year was when Former Dallas Cowboy, Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irving, needed some straightening out from Smith after he got lost comparing football and basketball.

  • When He Thought Antonio Brown Was Acting Like A Clown

It wasn’t all fun and games in 2019, like this sobering take on Antonio Brown’s antics this year that have left him without a job and possibly facing criminal charges.

  • When He Reacted To The Chatter Around Tim Tebow

Colleges benefit greatly from their sports programs, especially football and basketball. So should players get paid or remain amateurs? Tim Tebow chimed in his opinion and got scorched into oblivion.

  • When He Addressed His Hairline

Stephen A. has a three pronged plan to save his hairline. He might need reinforcements. Be that as it may, he addressed the topic this year and brought to light his concerns and strategy and also provided some hilarious low key shade to NFL legend Deion Sanders.

  • When He Chilled With Snoop Dogg

While Stephen A. loves to recommend that people “Stay off the Weeeed”, his chemistry with Snoop is undeniable as the two waxed poetic on NBA topics at the Finals this year. Can we get these two a podcast already?
