Jhene Aiko is all about that vegan life, and she's willing to go to great lengths to prove it.
The singer and animal rights activist is the latest celebrity to join PETA's "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" campaign, dropping her drawers and everything else for a sexy ad that'll convince even the biggest cheeseburger lover to switch to seitan.
We caught up with Miss Aiko at the grand unveiling of her new campaign, which took place at PETA's Empathy Center in Los Angeles, to talk all things over a glass of champagne and a snack of Beluga lentil canapes. Plus, see her sexy new ad for yourself, below.
What made you want to be a part of this campaign?
I'm very passionate about animals and about not wearing fur. I'm just honored to be a part of this campaign with PETA. I just feel like, with everything that's going on, let's not forget about the animals that don't have a voice.
Were you nervous to go naked?
Not at all. I grew up in a household where we're not modest at all. We were mostly women. I grew up loving to not have on shoes, not have on pants, stuff like that. So, no, I'm very comfortable in my skin.
You became a vegan in the last few years but grew up eating meat. Anything you miss about your old diet?
Sometimes desserts, like ice cream! But living in LA, there's so many vegan options for everything. And literally, your taste buds start to adjust. These days, it's like, "I'm craving cashew cheese!"
Have you been able to convince your man [rapper Big Sean] to join you on the vegan side?
He's definitely healthy. He's not afraid to eat vegan, for sure. But his mom is super health conscious so he grew up being very, very healthy. Every now and then, though, I'm like, "no, you shouldn't eat this or that!"
What's your go-to vegan comfort food?
Potatoes. Potatoes are definitely comfort food. We always go to Crossroads, which is a vegan place in LA, they have chicken and waffles and things like that but it's all vegan. When I'm looking to fill up, and just feel full, that and some type of berry smoothie hits the spot.
What are your style resolutions for 2017?
I want to take it further with my veganism. I have a vegan diet, but I still have a few pieces that have leather in my closet. It's not the same as wearing fur, but I'd still like to take it further, little by little. There are so many things in my closet that I don't even know about, but it's all about being educated.
